Proverbs 8:22-30 is used by many to show that the Son of God (Christ) was brought forth from the Father before anything was created. From the period of dateless ages that Christ was brought forth, there has never been a time where He was not in close fellowship with His Father. Both 1 Corinthians 1:24, 30 are used to show that Christ was made unto us wisdom.

      • Proverbs 8:22-30 The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old. 23 I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was. 24 When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water. 25 Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth: 26 While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world. 27 When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth: 28 When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep: 29 When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth: 30 Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him.
      • 1 Corinthians 1:24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.
      • 1 Corinthians 1:30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:

We are told in Malachi 2:10 that one God created us. Ephesians 3:9 says that it was God who created through His Son, Jesus Christ (see also Hebrews 1:2). Knowing that one God created through His Son we can now understand Proverbs 30:4-6 enough to answer the question, what is His Son’s name?

      • Malachi 2:10 Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us?…
      • Ephesians 3:9God, who created all things by Jesus Christ.
      • Hebrews 1:2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds.
      • Proverbs 30:4-6 Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son’s name, if thou canst tell? 5 Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him. 6 Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.

Did the faithful Hebrews know about God having a Son so as to have educated Nebuchadnezzar about that fact?

      • Daniel 3:25 He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.

According to John 1:1-2 we know that God the Father created all things through His Son, therefore the Son must have existed before anything was created: including angels, grass, birds, stars, everything…

      • John 1:1-2 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God.
      • John 1:14-15 The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. 15 John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.

John 3:16 reveals that Jesus Christ was given as the only begotten Son, not to become an only begotten Son (see also Isaiah 9:6).

      • John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
      • Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

As the only Mediator between God and men (1 Timothy 2:5), how could He have not existed if He was mediating during the time of the Old Testament—after Adam’s fall—before the incarnation?

      • 1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.
      • Genesis 28:12 He dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.
      • John 1:51 And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.

Consider John 17:5, as denying Christ’s preexistence would deny His divine origin before being brought forth from his earthly mother Mary.

      • John 17:5 Now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.

Hebrews 1:6 says that the firstbegotten was brought into the world, meaning, there was a firstbegotten to be brought into the world! Also, with God giving a command to worship the firstbegotten, if He were not divine before being brought forth from Mary, God would have commanded the angels to worship a human!

      • Hebrews 1:6 Again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.

When the Son of God was sent by His Father into the world, a body (not an existence), had been prepared for Him.

      • Hebrews 10:5 When he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me.

Christ believed and taught that He was both from the Father and was sent by Him:

      • John 7:29 I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me.
      • John 8:42 Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.
      • John 16:27-30 The Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God. 28 I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father 29 His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb. 30 Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God.
      • John 17:8 I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.

John 3:16-18 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Ultimately, the Son of God became the Son of man to save everyone that believes.

“Another dangerous error is the doctrine that denies the deity of Christ, claiming that He had no existence before His advent to this world. This theory is received with favor by a large class who profess to believe the Bible; yet it directly contradicts the plainest statements of our Saviour concerning His relationship with the Father, His divine character, and His pre-existence. It cannot be entertained without the most unwarranted wresting of the Scriptures. It not only lowers man’s conceptions of the work of redemption, but undermines faith in the Bible as a revelation from God. While this renders it the more dangerous, it makes it also harder to meet. If men reject the testimony of the inspired Scriptures concerning the deity of Christ, it is in vain to argue the point with them; for no argument, however conclusive, could convince them. “The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” 1 Corinthians 2:14. None who hold this error can have a true conception of the character or the mission of Christ, or of the great plan of God for man’s redemption.” The Great Controversy, 524.2
